Buying a car directly from its owner can make it easier to discuss the vehicle's history and avoid a dealer's margin. However, not every private listing is a bargain. A good price only matters when the car's condition, documents and the seller's claims can be verified.
This guide was prepared by the Monitor Ofert team. We run a service that automatically checks new car listings on Otomoto and OLX. You choose your own search filters, and our bot sends matching offers to Telegram. Below, we cover the process from the initial search to signing the contract.
Where to find cars from private sellers
Most listings in Poland can be found on Otomoto and OLX. It is worth checking both because some sellers advertise on only one platform. Set the make, model, year, mileage, fuel type, transmission, location and maximum price. If the platform offers a seller-type filter, select private listings.
Avoid relying on one extremely narrow search. If you are considering several engines or models, create separate filters for them. This makes it easier to compare prices and recognise a listing that genuinely stands out from the market.
Stop refreshing listings all day
A sensibly priced car from a private owner can quickly attract plenty of calls. Monitor Ofert checks your Otomoto and OLX searches automatically. Open the configured search in a web browser, copy the link from the address bar and send it to our bot. When a new listing appears, you receive a Telegram notification with a photo, price and direct link.
What to ask the seller before travelling
If the listing looks promising, calling immediately is usually best. A short conversation can tell you whether the car is worth viewing. Ask for:
- the VIN, registration number and date of first registration;
- confirmation of how long the seller has owned the car;
- service records, invoices and details of any accident repairs;
- permission for a test drive and an inspection at a workshop you choose;
- an explanation of any differences between the description, photos and documents.
Evasive answers, refusal to provide the VIN or pressure to transfer a deposit immediately are reasons to proceed with particular caution.
Check the vehicle history using the VIN
Before viewing the car, use Poland's free government service Vehicle History. With the registration number, VIN and date of first registration, you can check technical details, the validity of the roadworthiness test and OC insurance, changes of ownership and information recorded in the vehicle's history.
The report can reveal inconsistencies, but it does not replace a physical inspection. No recorded damage does not guarantee that the vehicle has never been repaired.
What to check during the viewing
- that the VIN on the vehicle matches the documents;
- a cold start, dashboard warnings, leaks and unusual noises;
- paintwork, panel gaps, windows and tyre condition;
- air conditioning, electronics and other equipment;
- steering, braking, transmission and suspension during the test drive.
Even if the car looks good, arrange an inspection at an independent workshop or diagnostic station. The cost is small compared with repairing a hidden engine, transmission or accident-related problem.
Documents, contract and payment
Compare the seller's identity document with the vehicle documents. The contract should contain the correct details of both parties, VIN, registration number, price, handover date and any agreed information about the car's condition. Do not agree to record a lower price than the amount you actually paid.
Buying from a private individual is also different from buying from a business. Poland's Office of Competition and Consumer Protection explains that a buyer in a transaction between private individuals is not acting as a consumer. This makes it particularly important to check the contract and the vehicle before paying.
Does a very low price always mean a bargain?
No. A price well below similar cars may reflect an urgent sale, but it can also point to a hidden fault, unclear history or a fake listing. Monitor Ofert helps you see a new offer quickly, but the purchase decision should always be based on documents, a history report, an inspection and a mechanic's opinion.
